About Eleanor
I love teaching students how to move, and I love helping teachers to expand the ways that they can teach. Science and scientists are often thought of as strict and dogmatic, and I understand that impression — it’s often how we are presented in the media! But in fact, good science is the opposite of dogmatic: it is alive, vital and constantly changing with new information and research. Teaching in an evidence-based way means shifting how we teach as our collective understanding of the human body and how it works changes.
My name is Dr Eleanor Spring. I moved to the Netherlands in 2017 for my PhD position (in astronomy, at the University of Amsterdam) and I never left! I am making my home in Amsterdam with my husband and our children.
Before Amsterdam, I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland as a completed my Bachelors and Masters in Astrophysics. Before that, I was born and raised in London, England. I have always been interested in different types of movement — I was terrible at (and terrified of) group sports in school, but I danced from a young age. I tried yoga for the first time when I was 18 in London, but I did not really dive deeper until I was 20 and in my second year of University. I was a bit miserable at the time, and my mental and physical health were not very good. I found respite in yoga classes: it gave me a space where I could move my body at my own pace and give my mind a bit of breathing room.
Yoga has remained a part of my life ever since.
training
I studied my first 200 hours alongside my Bachelors degree in 2013/14. I followed this with another 200-hour training in India in 2015, and advanced 300-hour training in Ireland spaced out over the next few years. I completed my 85-hour prenatal teacher training in 2019 in Amsterdam, with a visiting teacher. I have been a Yoga Alliance (YA) experienced 500-hour registered yoga teacher since 2020.
